We have a list of upgrades we offer customers on the VW Grand California, this particular van had most of them in one go!
We were delivered the Grand California 600 directly from the dealer with less than 300 miles on the clock. We installed the following upgrades
- Full power management upgrade
- VB semi air suspension upgrade
- Roof top air conditioning
- Front nudge bar and spotlights
- Under slung gas tank
- Electronic waste tank dump valve
- Soft close sliding door
- Awning upgrade to make it electric
- Rear additional reversing lights
I will go through each upgrade individually
The gas locker in a Grand California can repurposed to house the power management system if you install an under slung gas tank. By repurposing the old gas locker we were able to install a 628AH lithium battery, a 2kva Victron Multi, and a 90 amp split charge upgrade. This was all controlled by a Victron GX system with a 5” display.

We installed a VB Semi air system to allow for a rear axle weight upgrade. It is now also possible to install VB four channel full air suspension on a Grand California improving the handling a ride even further.

We installed a Dometic Fresh Jet FJX7 inverter compressor air conditioning system. This unit can be run off grid for up to 12 hours off the battery.

We installed a nudge bar with 9” spot lights, these lights had a canbus connection into the vans wiring loom so the full beam was activated with the vans original headlights.

As many people who own Grand Californias will know, they are quite air tight! This means that closing the sliding door from the inside can be difficult. This is made far easier with a soft close system on the sliding door.
The standard awning on a Grand California uses a crank handle to open and close it, it is possible to retrofit an electric motor so the awning can be opened and closed at the touch of a button.
If you are manoeuvring on a very dark camp site the standard reversing lights can be a little dim. These additional rear lights can be turned on and off from a switch on the dash board.
